A misfire is not just an annoying shake at the lights. When you are asking why your engine keeps misfiring, the answer matters because unburnt fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Leave it long enough and a relatively affordable ignition or sensor repair can become a much larger bill.
A misfire means one or more cylinders is not burning its air and fuel mixture properly. It may happen only on a cold start, under hard acceleration, at idle, or all the time. The pattern is useful: it helps narrow down whether the fault is likely ignition, fuel delivery, air intake, sensors or an internal engine problem.
Signs your engine is misfiring
The obvious symptom is a rough, uneven engine note. Your car may shudder through the steering wheel or seat, struggle to accelerate, feel flat going uphill, use more fuel than usual, or smell strongly of petrol from the exhaust. Some vehicles will also go into reduced-power mode.
Pay close attention to the check engine light. A steady light means the vehicle has logged a fault and needs checking soon. A flashing check engine light is more urgent. It commonly indicates an active misfire severe enough to risk catalytic converter damage. Avoid driving it hard and arrange a diagnosis before using the car normally.
If the fault only appears in rain, after washing the engine bay, or on damp mornings, moisture around ignition parts is a strong possibility. If it appears after filling up, poor-quality or contaminated fuel may be involved. These details save time and prevent replacing parts blindly.
Why engine keeps misfiring: the common causes
Worn spark plugs
Spark plugs wear gradually, so the change can be easy to miss. As the electrode wears and the gap increases, the ignition system has to work harder to produce a reliable spark. Under load, such as overtaking or climbing a hill, the spark can fail and the engine starts to stumble.
Incorrect plug type, incorrect gap, cracked porcelain and oil-fouled plugs can cause the same result. Always use plugs specified for your vehicle and engine. Many modern engines are sensitive to plug heat range and gap, particularly turbocharged models. A cheap plug that does not match the application is not a saving.
If you remove the plugs, compare them cylinder to cylinder. One black, oily or wet plug compared with the others gives a technician a useful clue. Do not keep cleaning and refitting a fouled plug without finding out why it fouled in the first place.
Failing ignition coils or leads
Most newer vehicles use a coil-on-plug ignition coil for each cylinder. When one coil becomes weak, it may work at idle but break down under acceleration. This is a very common cause of a single-cylinder misfire on Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, BMW and many other vehicles.
Older vehicles may use ignition leads. Worn, split or corroded leads can leak spark before it reaches the plug. Look for damaged insulation, loose connections and signs of arcing. A coil or lead fault is often more noticeable in wet conditions.
A scan tool may show a fault code identifying the affected cylinder, such as a cylinder 2 misfire. That code points to where to test, not necessarily which part to buy. A plug, coil, injector, wiring fault or compression issue can all cause a misfire on the same cylinder.
Fuel injector or fuel supply problems
Each cylinder needs the right amount of fuel. A blocked, leaking or electrically faulty fuel injector can create a rough idle, hesitation and misfire. Fuel pressure problems can affect several cylinders at once, especially when the engine is under load.
A blocked fuel filter, weak fuel pump or contaminated fuel may be behind a wider engine performance issue. On some newer vehicles the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly, so it is not always a simple scheduled replacement. Check the service information for your exact model before ordering parts.
Do not assume an injector needs replacing because an additive did not fix the problem. Cleaning may help minor deposits, but it will not repair a failed injector solenoid, damaged wiring or low fuel pressure.
Vacuum leaks and air intake faults
An engine computer calculates fuel delivery based on the air entering the engine. A cracked intake hose, split vacuum line, leaking intake gasket or loose clamp lets in air that has not been measured. The mixture can become too lean and trigger a rough idle or random misfire.
Inspect the intake piping from the air filter box to the throttle body. Check for cracks underneath hoses, where they are easy to miss, and make sure every clamp is secure. A badly blocked air filter can also restrict airflow, although it is less likely to cause one-cylinder misfires on its own.
Mass airflow sensors, manifold pressure sensors and throttle body faults can produce similar symptoms. These parts should be tested rather than guessed at. Replacing sensors without confirming the fault code, live data or wiring condition can waste money fast.
Oxygen sensor faults
An oxygen sensor monitors exhaust gases and helps the engine adjust its air-fuel mixture. A tired or faulty sensor can contribute to poor fuel economy, hesitation and fault codes. However, an oxygen sensor code does not always mean the sensor itself has failed.
A vacuum leak, exhaust leak, injector issue or genuine misfire can make the sensor report an abnormal reading. Fix the root cause first. If the sensor is confirmed faulty, choose the correct upstream or downstream position for your vehicle, as they do different jobs.
Low compression or mechanical wear
If ignition, fuel and air checks do not explain the problem, the engine may have low compression in one cylinder. Possible causes include a burnt valve, worn piston rings, a damaged head gasket or timing issues. These repairs are more involved, but testing compression early can stop unnecessary spending on plugs, coils and sensors.
Mechanical faults are more likely when the misfire is constant, one plug repeatedly fouls, coolant disappears, oil consumption is high, or the engine has overheated. A compression or leak-down test is the sensible next step.
Check the easy things before buying parts
Start by noting when the fault occurs and whether the check engine light is steady or flashing. Then scan for diagnostic trouble codes if you have access to a scanner. Record the codes before clearing anything. Clearing them too early can remove information that helps pinpoint the issue.
With the engine off and cool, check that coil plugs, injector plugs and intake hoses are fully connected. Look for chewed wiring, oil in spark plug wells and obvious vacuum hose damage. If basic servicing is overdue, inspect the air filter and confirm the spark plugs are the right age and specification.
For a code tied to one cylinder, a common workshop test is swapping the ignition coil with another cylinder and seeing whether the misfire code moves. This can identify a coil fault, but only do it if you are confident working around the ignition system and can refit everything correctly. Never disconnect coils or injectors with the engine running unless you know the correct test procedure.
When to stop driving
Stop and arrange help if the check engine light flashes, the engine is shaking heavily, there is smoke, the temperature gauge rises, or you can smell raw fuel. Continuing to drive can damage the catalytic converter and, in the case of a fuel leak, create a safety risk.
A mild intermittent misfire with a steady warning light may allow a short trip to a workshop, but that depends on the symptoms. There is no benefit in repeatedly driving the car to see if it clears itself. Misfires rarely improve on their own.
For straightforward maintenance faults, buying the correct replacement spark plugs, ignition coil, air filter or oxygen sensor can keep costs under control.
