When should you replace an oil filter?

A rattle or tapping noise after an oil change could be related to low oil level or delayed oil pressure, although engine noise always deserves proper diagnosis. If the oil-pressure warning light stays on after start-up, do not assume it will clear itself.
Also take note if your car is using more oil than usual, smells of burning oil, leaves spots where it is parked or has missed several scheduled services. The filter may not be the only cause, but catching an oil-system issue early is cheaper than waiting for engine damage.
