A misfire can feel like a rough idle at the lights, hesitation when you accelerate, or a check-engine light that appears without warning. The ignition coil converts low battery voltage into the high voltage needed to fire each spark plug. Signs the ignition coil may be faulty
A failed coil is a common cause of a single-cylinder misfire, but it is not the only cause. Worn spark plugs, damaged coil boots, oil in the spark plug tube, a faulty injector, wiring damage or an air leak can produce similar symptoms.
Common warning signs include:
- Rough idle, shaking or intermittent stalling
- Hesitation, reduced power or surging under acceleration
- Poor fuel use and a strong fuel smell from the exhaust
- A flashing or steady check-engine light
- Hard starting, especially in damp conditions
Do not keep driving with a flashing check-engine light. A persistent misfire can send unburnt fuel into the exhaust and damage the catalytic converter, turning a manageable repair into a much more expensive one.
Choosing between one coil and a full set
When one ignition coil fails, you do not automatically need to replace every coil. Replacing the failed unit is often the sensible budget option, particularly where the remaining coils test well and the vehicle is not showing other ignition faults.

Unplug the coil connector by releasing its locking tab rather than pulling on the wiring. Remove the retaining bolt where fitted, then lift the coil straight out. If it is stuck, twist gently to free the rubber boot. Avoid levering against the rocker cover or damaging the connector.
Before fitting the new coil, inspect the spark plug well. Water, oil and corrosion can cause repeat ignition problems. Oil in the well may point to a leaking rocker cover gasket or spark plug tube seal, which needs attention rather than simply fitting another coil.
Push the new coil onto the spark plug until it is fully seated, refit the bolt to the manufacturer’s torque specification and reconnect the plug securely. Once reassembled, start the vehicle and check for smooth idle, warning lights and fault codes. If the misfire remains, stop replacing parts at random and arrange proper diagnosis.
