How to Replace Engine Air Filter in Your Car

A dirty engine air filter is one of the cheapest maintenance items to fix, yet it can leave your car feeling less responsive and working harder than it should. Learning how to replace engine air filter yourself takes only a few minutes on many vehicles and can help keep routine running costs under control.

The engine air filter stops dust, grit, leaves and other debris from entering the engine through the intake. It is not the same as the cabin filter, which cleans the air coming through your heating and air conditioning vents. Both matter, but they sit in different places and do different jobs.

When does an engine air filter need replacing?

Your owner’s manual provides the best service interval for your specific vehicle. Many cars need an engine air filter replaced at regular kilometre intervals, but the right timing depends on where and how you drive. A vehicle used mainly on sealed city roads may go longer than one regularly driven on gravel roads, near building sites, on rural properties, or in dusty conditions.

A quick visual check is useful. Remove the filter and inspect the pleats under good light. A light grey or off-white filter can still be serviceable. If it is heavily blackened, packed with dust, damp, damaged, or full of leaves and insects, replace it. Do not judge it by one dirty-looking patch alone, as the outside of the housing can make a filter look worse than it is.

Other signs can point to a restricted filter, although they may also have other causes. These include reduced acceleration, poorer fuel economy, an unusually noisy intake, rough running, or an engine warning light. Replacing a heavily blocked filter is sensible maintenance, but it will not cure every performance problem. If symptoms continue, the vehicle may need further diagnosis.

Buy the right filter before opening the airbox

The most important part of replacing an engine air filter is getting the correct fitment. Filters can look almost identical while having different lengths, seals, depths or locating tabs. A poor fit can allow unfiltered air past the edges, which defeats the purpose of fitting a new filter.

Check your vehicle’s make, model, year, engine size and fuel type before ordering. Where possible, confirm the part number from the existing filter or your vehicle documentation. This is especially useful for popular models that came with more than one engine option across the same model year.

Choose an engine air filter, not a cabin pollen filter. Engine filters are normally fitted in a plastic airbox under the bonnet, connected to the intake pipe. Cabin filters are commonly behind the glovebox, under the dash, or at the base of the windscreen.

  • a mobile light if the airbox is tucked into a dark corner of the engine bay

How to replace engine air filter step by step

1. Park safely and locate the airbox

Park on level ground, apply the handbrake and switch the engine off. Open the bonnet and locate the airbox. It is usually a black plastic box near the front or side of the engine bay, with a large intake hose leading away from it.

On some vehicles, the airbox lid is secured with metal clips. Others use screws, bolts or Torx fasteners. A few designs require you to remove a small intake duct or loosen a hose clamp first. Take a moment to look at the layout before undoing anything.

2. Open the housing carefully

Release the clips or remove the fasteners holding the airbox lid in place. Keep screws somewhere safe, as they are easy to drop into the engine bay. Lift the lid only as far as necessary.

Do not pull hard on attached hoses, wiring plugs or sensors. Many modern cars have an airflow sensor close to the airbox. You normally do not need to disconnect it for a basic filter replacement. If the lid does not lift easily, check for a hidden fastener or duct still holding it in place.

3. Remove and inspect the old filter

Lift the old filter straight out. Note which way it sits in the housing, particularly if it has a shaped rubber seal or an uneven profile. Take a quick photo on your mobile before removal if you think you may forget the orientation.

Check the filter for heavy dust, tears, moisture, oil residue or signs that it has not been sealing properly. A filter that is oily can indicate an engine breather issue. A wet filter may mean water has entered through the intake. In either case, fitting a new filter is still necessary, but it is worth checking why the old one was contaminated.

4. Clean the airbox, not the intake pipe

Use a clean rag to wipe loose dust and debris from the lower half of the airbox. Be careful not to push dirt down the intake pipe. If there are leaves, stones or a large amount of debris inside, remove them gently before installing the new filter.

Do not spray solvents, water or cleaning products into the airbox. Keep the job simple and dry. The goal is to stop loose debris from sitting under the new filter seal.

5. Fit the new filter squarely

Place the replacement filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old one. Make sure every edge of the rubber or foam seal sits flat in its channel. This step matters more than rushing to close the lid.

A filter that is pinched, folded or sitting on top of a locating tab will not seal correctly. If the new filter does not drop into place without force, compare it with the old one. Check the part number, shape and depth before proceeding.

6. Refit the lid and check your work

Lower the airbox lid carefully, making sure it does not dislodge the filter. Refit all clips, screws or bolts evenly. Reconnect any intake duct or hose clamp you removed.

Before closing the bonnet, inspect the area for loose tools, rags and fasteners. Start the engine and listen for a normal idle. A loud hissing noise, whistling, or an engine warning light after the job can mean an intake hose is loose or the airbox lid is not fully seated. Switch the engine off and recheck the assembly.

Common mistakes that cost more later

The most common mistake is fitting the wrong filter because it looks close enough. The second is confusing the engine air filter with the cabin filter. Both are avoidable by checking vehicle details and part fitment before ordering.

Another issue is leaving one airbox clip undone or trapping the filter seal under the lid. Even a small gap can allow dirty air to bypass the filter. Take an extra minute to run your hand around the airbox and confirm that it is fully closed.

Some owners replace an air filter expecting an immediate major power increase. A fresh filter can restore normal airflow when the old one is restricted, but a healthy engine will not suddenly gain dramatic performance from a routine replacement. The real benefit is protecting the engine from abrasive dust while maintaining proper airflow.
