A dead horn, airbag warning light or steering-wheel buttons that stop working after turning can point to one small part behind the wheel. Knowing how to replace clock spring assemblies can save on labour costs, but this is not a repair to rush. The clock spring sits beside the driver airbag and must be centred correctly before the steering wheel goes back on.

What a clock spring does
The clock spring, also called a spiral cable or combination switch cable, is a flat ribbon cable housed in a circular cassette behind the steering wheel. It maintains electrical connection while the wheel turns left and right.
Depending on the vehicle, it may carry circuits for the driver airbag, horn, cruise control, audio controls, phone buttons, paddle shifters and steering angle sensor. When its internal ribbon cable cracks or wears out, one or more of these functions may fail.
Common signs include an illuminated airbag or SRS warning light, intermittent horn operation, non-working steering-wheel controls, or faults that appear only when the wheel is turned. These symptoms can also be caused by wiring, fuses, a faulty horn switch or a scan-tool fault code elsewhere in the system. Diagnose before buying parts.
Before you replace the clock spring
Start by confirming the exact part number and fitment for your vehicle. Clock springs can look nearly identical but differ in plug layout, steering angle sensor arrangement, cruise-control wiring and airbag connections. Match the year, make, model, variant and VIN details where possible. This matters on popular Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki, Subaru, BMW, Holden and Fiat models, where specification changes can occur within the same model range.
You will generally need a socket set, steering-wheel retaining socket, trim tools, small screwdrivers, torque wrench, marker pen and possibly a steering-wheel puller. A scan tool may be needed to clear stored SRS codes after the repair. Check the workshop information for your specific vehicle before beginning, especially for airbag removal instructions and steering-wheel bolt torque.
Park with the front wheels pointing dead straight. Centre the steering wheel, remove the key or switch the vehicle off, and make sure the steering lock is not under load. Then disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least 10 to 15 minutes before touching the airbag wiring, or longer if your vehicle manufacturer specifies it. This allows stored power in the restraint system to discharge.
Do not use a test light or multimeter on airbag connectors. Do not place the removed airbag face down. Always set it on a stable surface with the trim cover facing up.
How to replace a clock spring step by step
1. Remove the driver airbag carefully
Most steering wheels have access holes or retaining clips on the rear of the wheel. Use the correct tool and release method for your vehicle. Avoid forcing clips, as steering-wheel trim and airbag retainers are easy to damage.
Lift the airbag module out only far enough to access its connectors. Airbag plugs often have coloured locking tabs that must be released first. Disconnect the plugs carefully, then place the module trim-side up away from your work area.
2. Mark and remove the steering wheel
Before undoing the centre retaining bolt or nut, mark the relationship between the steering wheel and steering shaft. Many vehicles have factory alignment marks, but adding a small reference mark gives you a useful check during reassembly.
Loosen the retaining bolt or nut, but leave it threaded on by a few turns. Pull the wheel towards you evenly to release it from the splines. Leaving the fastener in place prevents the wheel from striking you if it releases suddenly. If it is tight, use an appropriate puller rather than hitting the shaft or pulling on the wheel spokes.
Once loose, remove the fastener and guide the steering wheel off while feeding its wiring connectors through. Keep the front wheels straight and do not rotate the steering shaft after the wheel is removed.
3. Remove the column shrouds and disconnect the old unit
Remove the upper and lower steering-column covers. Screws are often hidden underneath or behind the wheel adjustment lever. Use trim tools where needed so you do not crack the plastic.
The clock spring may sit as a separate cassette or as part of a larger combination switch assembly. Unplug the electrical connectors and note where each connector routes. Take a few clear photos before disconnecting anything. Release the retaining clips or screws, then lift the old unit away without turning it.
4. Centre the replacement clock spring
This is the step that decides whether the repair lasts. Many new clock springs arrive locked in the centred position with a tab, pin or transport clip. Keep that lock installed until the unit is fitted to the column.
If the replacement is not locked, follow its supplied instructions. A typical method is to rotate the inner section gently to one end of its travel, then turn it back the specified number of turns until the centre mark aligns. Do not assume every unit has the same number of turns. Forcing it at either end can damage the ribbon cable.
Fit the clock spring with its alignment marks in the centred position. Ensure the locating tabs are fully seated and the wiring is routed exactly as intended. Reconnect each plug firmly, then reinstall the column covers.
5. Refit the steering wheel and airbag
Feed the wiring through the steering wheel, align your reference marks and slide the wheel onto the shaft. Install the retaining bolt or nut and tighten it to the manufacturer’s specified torque. Guessing torque on a steering component is not worth the risk.
Reconnect the steering-wheel wiring and airbag connectors. Check that each locking tab is fully engaged. Refit the airbag module until its clips lock securely. Do not trap wires between the airbag and steering wheel.
Reconnect the battery terminal from outside the vehicle where practical, keeping clear of the airbag deployment path. Switch the ignition on and check the warning lights. The SRS light should come on briefly during its self-check and then turn off. If it remains on, do not ignore it - scan the vehicle for fault codes and recheck every connection.
Checks after clock spring replacement
With the vehicle stationary, test the horn, steering-wheel buttons, cruise controls and any other functions that run through the wheel. Turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock and listen for rubbing, clicking or resistance. A properly centred clock spring should allow full steering travel without noise.
Some vehicles require steering angle sensor calibration after the job, particularly if the sensor is built into the clock spring assembly. If traction control, stability control or steering warning lights remain on, calibration with a compatible scan tool may be required. Clearing a code without fixing the underlying issue will only bring the warning light back.
Take a short, careful road test only after all warning lights and steering functions are normal. Confirm the wheel is centred while driving straight. If it is not, do not remove and reposition the steering wheel as a shortcut - wheel alignment should be checked if the vehicle tracks incorrectly.
Avoid the costly mistakes
The most common failure is fitting a clock spring while it is off-centre. It may work initially, then tear internally on the first full turn. The next common problem is ordering by appearance rather than part number. A cheaper incorrect unit is still wasted money and can leave the airbag system disabled.
Also avoid rotating the steering shaft with the clock spring removed, using excessive force on airbag connectors, or reconnecting the battery before all plugs are secure. These are small oversights with expensive consequences.
