A shudder at the lights, rough idle, weak acceleration or a flashing engine warning light are problems worth acting on quickly. Common engine misfire causes range from a worn spark plug to a failing ignition coil, fuel delivery fault or air leak. Finding the cause before ordering parts can save money and prevent a small repair turning into catalytic converter damage.
A misfire means one or more cylinders are not burning the air and fuel mixture properly. The engine may still run, but it will run unevenly. On a four-cylinder car, one dead cylinder is especially noticeable: the vehicle can vibrate through the steering wheel, struggle uphill and use more fuel than usual.
What an engine misfire feels like
Misfires are not always constant. A vehicle may idle roughly when cold, then smooth out once warm. It may only hesitate under load, such as when overtaking or climbing a steep road. Others appear during wet weather, when moisture exposes a weak coil, damaged lead or cracked plug boot.
Watch for a flashing check engine light. A steady light usually means the fault has been recorded and needs diagnosis. A flashing light can indicate an active misfire severe enough to send unburnt fuel into the exhaust. If that happens, reduce driving and arrange a repair as soon as practical. Continuing to drive can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, which is far more expensive than basic ignition parts.
A scan tool can often show a fault code such as P0300 for random or multiple-cylinder misfires, or P0301 to P0304 for a specific cylinder. The code points to where the problem is showing up, not always the exact failed component. A P0302 code, for example, does not automatically mean cylinder two needs a new injector.
Engine misfire causes: start with ignition parts
For petrol vehicles, ignition faults are among the most common and cost-effective places to check. Spark plugs wear over time. Their electrode gap increases, making it harder for the spark to jump under pressure. A plug can also become fouled by oil, coolant or excessive fuel, which gives useful clues about a deeper problem.
Ignition coils convert battery voltage into the high voltage needed to fire the plugs. A weak coil may work at idle but fail when the engine is under load. Many modern Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Holden, Suzuki and Fiat models use coil-on-plug ignition, where each cylinder has its own coil. That makes testing more straightforward in some cases.
If a scan identifies one cylinder, a mechanic may swap that cylinder’s coil with another cylinder and clear the fault code. If the misfire moves with the coil, the coil is likely faulty. The same approach can help isolate a spark plug issue, provided plugs are removed and installed carefully with the correct type and gap.
Older vehicles may use ignition leads instead of individual coils. Look for brittle insulation, corrosion at terminals, cracks and signs of arcing. Leads, plugs and coils are service parts. Replacing them at the recommended interval is often cheaper than waiting for a roadside breakdown.
Fuel, air and sensor faults can cause the same symptoms
A misfire is not always an ignition problem. If replacing plugs or coils does not fix it, the next step is proper diagnosis rather than fitting parts at random.
Fuel injectors can clog, leak or fail electrically. A restricted injector delivers too little fuel to its cylinder, while a leaking injector can make that cylinder run too rich. Fuel pressure issues can also affect multiple cylinders, especially during acceleration. A weak fuel pump, blocked filter on vehicles with a serviceable external filter, or a pressure control fault can all be involved.
The engine also needs the right amount of clean air. A split intake hose, loose clamp or vacuum leak lets unmetered air into the engine. This can create a lean mixture and rough idle, often with a hissing sound. Check the intake plumbing between the air filter box and throttle body, plus smaller vacuum hoses where accessible. A badly blocked air filter may not create a single-cylinder misfire on its own, but it can contribute to poor running and should be replaced as part of normal servicing.
Sensors affect the fuel mixture too. A faulty oxygen sensor may send incorrect exhaust readings to the engine computer. Problems with the mass air flow sensor, manifold pressure sensor or coolant temperature sensor can also cause poor starting, hesitation and misfire-like behaviour. Sensor faults need testing because a code may identify a circuit problem, a reading outside range or a fault caused by another issue.
Mechanical problems need more than a parts swap
When ignition, air and fuel checks do not solve a cylinder-specific misfire, consider the engine’s mechanical condition. Low compression from worn piston rings, a burnt valve, a valve timing problem or a blown head gasket can stop a cylinder from producing proper power.
Signs of a mechanical fault can include ongoing misfire on the same cylinder, coolant loss, overheating, blue or white exhaust smoke, oil consumption, or a tapping noise from the engine. A compression test and, where needed, a leak-down test are the sensible next steps. These tests cost less than replacing several parts on guesswork.
Oil leaking into spark plug wells is another common issue on some engines. It can damage coil boots and cause intermittent misfires. Replacing the coil alone may provide only a short-term result if the valve cover gasket is still leaking.
A practical order for diagnosing a misfire
Start with the simple checks, then move towards tests that need more equipment. This approach helps control repair costs.
- Check the engine warning light and scan for fault codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect spark plugs, coils or leads, connectors and visible intake hoses.
- Confirm the correct service history and replace overdue plugs, filters or damaged ignition parts.
- Test suspected coils or injectors instead of replacing every component at once.
- Book compression, fuel pressure or smoke testing if the fault persists or the engine has mechanical warning signs.
Choosing the right replacement part
Vehicle fitment matters. Two engines in the same model range may use different spark plugs, coils, oxygen sensors or filters depending on the engine code, build year and transmission. Use the vehicle registration details where available, but confirm engine size, VIN or OEM part number if there is any doubt.
For spark plugs, fit the specified heat range and design. Cheaper is not always better if the plug does not match the engine requirements. For coils and sensors, choose a quality replacement part with correct connectors and mounting points. A correctly fitted aftermarket part can be a practical way to bring repair costs down, but it still needs to be the right application.
Do not overlook related parts. If a failed coil has contaminated or damaged a spark plug, replacing both may be sensible. If an oxygen sensor fault is linked to an exhaust leak, fitting a new sensor before repairing the leak may not solve the issue. The best value repair fixes the cause, not just the code.
When to stop driving
Pull over safely and avoid further driving if the engine warning light is flashing, the vehicle is shaking heavily, there is a strong fuel smell, the temperature gauge is rising or there is a loss of power in traffic. Those symptoms can create a safety risk as well as expensive secondary damage.
For a mild intermittent misfire with no flashing warning light, limit unnecessary driving while arranging diagnosis. Keep a record of codes and symptoms before a workshop clears them. That information gives you a better chance of buying only the parts your vehicle actually needs.
