That red airbag symbol is not a reminder to deal with later. When it stays on after starting the car, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) has detected a fault and may not work as designed in a crash. Common airbag light causes range from a loose connector under a seat to a failed clock spring in the steering wheel. The only reliable way to identify the fault is to read the SRS diagnostic code.
The practical message is simple: do not ignore the light, but do not start replacing parts at random either. A basic engine code reader often cannot access airbag codes. You need a scan tool that reads the vehicle's SRS system, or a workshop that can perform the scan and confirm the failed circuit.
What the airbag warning light is telling you
When you turn the key or press the start button, the airbag light should illuminate briefly as a bulb check, then go out. If it remains on, flashes, or returns while driving, the SRS control module has stored a fault.
This does not always mean an airbag itself has failed. The SRS system includes front and side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, impact sensors, passenger-seat sensors, wiring looms, connectors, the control module and the steering wheel clock spring. A fault in any one of these components can trigger the warning.
Depending on the vehicle and fault code, one part of the restraint system may be disabled while other parts remain active. You cannot assume you are protected simply because the car drives normally. The warning can also create a problem at Warrant of Fitness time, so it is worth sorting before it becomes an urgent repair.
The most common airbag light causes
Failed clock spring
A clock spring, also called a spiral cable, sits behind the steering wheel. It carries electrical signals to the driver's airbag while allowing the wheel to turn from lock to lock. It is a common wear item on many vehicles, including popular Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Holden and Suzuki models.
Signs of a failing clock spring can include an airbag light combined with a non-working horn, steering wheel audio buttons or cruise-control switches. These symptoms are useful clues, but they are not a final diagnosis. Some vehicles have separate circuits, and a scan result still matters.
Clock spring replacement needs care. The steering wheel must be centred, the part must be fitted in its neutral position, and the airbag handling procedure must be followed. Fitting the wrong unit or rotating it before installation can damage it as soon as the steering is turned fully. Check the exact vehicle model, year, trim and connector configuration before ordering.
Loose or damaged seat wiring
Many modern cars have SRS wiring and connectors beneath the front seats. Moving a seat repeatedly, carrying items underneath it, or moisture in the carpet can strain a connector or damage wiring. This is especially common after a seat has been removed for cleaning, upholstery work or access to the carpet.
Do not reach under the seat and unplug yellow SRS connectors with the battery connected. Airbag circuits require correct isolation procedures. A workshop can inspect connector tension, corrosion and wiring damage once the system has been safely powered down. In some cases, repairing the wiring or securing a loose connector clears the issue. In others, the stored code points to a seatbelt pretensioner or occupancy sensor instead.
Seatbelt pretensioner fault
A pretensioner tightens the seatbelt rapidly in a serious impact to help hold the occupant in position. It is part of the SRS system, so a fault in its wiring, connector or internal circuit can illuminate the airbag light.
Pretensioner faults may show up after water damage, corrosion, a seat repair, accident damage or a previous deployment. A buckle that feels normal is not proof that the pretensioner circuit is healthy. The diagnostic code will usually identify the affected seat or circuit, making the repair far more targeted.
Passenger-seat occupancy sensor issue
Some vehicles use a sensor or sensor mat in the front passenger seat to determine occupant status and control passenger airbag operation. A warning can appear if the sensor develops an internal fault, if its wiring is damaged, or after seat cushions and covers have been disturbed.
This can be a more involved repair because the sensor may be integrated into the seat base. Avoid bypass modules or improvised resistor repairs. They may turn a warning light off temporarily, but they do not restore the system to its intended safety operation and can create problems at inspection time.
Low voltage, battery replacement or electrical faults
A weak battery, jump-starting, poor battery terminals or a charging-system issue can trigger low-voltage SRS codes. This is more likely if the warning appeared during a slow start, after the car sat unused, or alongside other electrical warnings.
Fixing the battery issue does not always switch the airbag light off by itself. The module may keep the historical code stored until it is cleared with a compatible scan tool. If the code returns immediately, there is an active fault that needs further diagnosis.
Crash sensor or SRS module problems
Impact sensors monitor collision forces and communicate with the SRS module. Accident damage, corrosion, water ingress and damaged wiring can all cause sensor-related codes. The module itself may also record crash data after airbag or pretensioner deployment.
After a collision, this is not a job for guesswork. Deployed components, damaged sensors, seatbelts, wiring and the module may all need assessment. Replacing only the visible airbag does not guarantee the system is safe or functional.
How to diagnose an airbag warning properly
Start by noting exactly when the light appeared. Was the battery flat? Was work recently done under a seat, behind the steering wheel or around the dashboard? Did the horn or steering wheel buttons stop working? These details can save diagnostic time.
Next, have the SRS codes read with suitable equipment. Record the full code and description before clearing anything. A code may identify a driver's airbag resistance fault, a passenger pretensioner circuit, a clock spring communication issue or low supply voltage. The description gives you a sensible starting point, not automatic permission to buy a part.
A technician should then inspect the relevant wiring and connectors, check the charging and battery condition where appropriate, and test components using the manufacturer-safe procedure. Airbag circuits should not be tested casually with a standard multimeter or test light. Incorrect testing can damage control modules or, in the worst case, interfere with a safety device.
Once the actual fault is repaired, clear the code and confirm the warning stays off through several ignition cycles. If it returns, the underlying issue is still present or there is another stored fault.
Can you drive with the airbag light on?
The vehicle may still run and brake normally, but driving with the SRS warning illuminated is a safety compromise. The airbag system or part of the seatbelt restraint system may not deploy correctly if you need it. There is also no way to judge the severity of the fault by the brightness of the light alone.
If the light appeared after a serious impact, water entered the cabin, or there are damaged steering wheel controls and exposed wiring, arrange professional assessment before regular use. For a light that appears without obvious damage, book a diagnostic scan promptly and avoid delaying the repair simply because the car feels fine.
Buying the right replacement part
Once a fault has been confirmed, matching the part correctly matters as much as finding a good price. Compare the original part number where possible, then verify the vehicle's make, model, year, engine and trim. For clock springs, connector plugs, steering-wheel controls and airbag type can differ between variants that look almost identical.
